New Sentinel

We are improving Sentinel for its users by taking advantage of the technology upgrade now available. Saltley, Perth and Carlisle will be the first to use the new Sentinel card.

Sentinel will remain our access card to working on the railway and the improved service will:

  • Reduce site registration times using smart phone technology;
  • Verify that 100% of people accessing the railway have the correct credentials to do so;
  • Provide an extended lone worker support solution;
  • Provide a registry of the people and skills that are on site;
  • Improve our capability to manage risks associated with fatigue;
  • Seek opportunities to improve and stream frontline processes.

For a card carrier, the biggest change is that secure and encrypted information is stored on the smartcard’s chip and updated through regular use, rather than printed on the card itself. This means that a single card with a life of up to 5 years will be used to authenticate the individual - regardless of how often changes are made to the sponsor, competence or medical record.

Rail Training Accreditation Scheme Rules

The RTAS Rules have been have been rewritten and are issued as an interim set of rules pending a more detailed rewrite due in 2014.  These interim rules have been updated to reflect best practice across the rail training industry and will be enforced from 6 January 2014. RTAS Interim Rules  (PDF 144 KB)

Feedback on Sentinel Training and Assessment Materials

 The following form is for training and assessment providers to provide specific feedback on any sentinel based training or assessment material.

Sentinel Training Feedback Form (XLS 87 KB)
This replaces the form which was previously held on the NCCA website. Please note that this is an interim measure and we are looking at ways of making this process easier and more user friendly.

Please complete all of the boxes at the top of the form and use the drop downs for Category, Course and Document. Once you have added your comments and completed your form please click on Submit. This will save a copy of the form into the documents area on your device and will email the form directly to Network Rail. Your feedback will then be reviewed by the relevant Project Manager who may contact you for further details.

    Related to the item of managing fatigue, I remember a few years ago there was talk of LUL joining the Sentinel scheme. Being based in the London & SE area, I have previously held railway COSS and LUL SPIC simultanously.

    Whilst, I never did, I know of workers who regular used to complete a day shift for the railway and a short night shift for LUL. Then back on a railway day shift. Is amalgamation still being considered?

    Hi Stephen. Yes, we are in active discussions with TfL to explore how we can share and manage information to prevent this sort of unsafe behaviour. Further info on this will be shared here when available. Thanks, Richard Elliott (Sentinel Programme Lead)

    Not everyone will have a smart phone, iphone or android, how can checks be made on site (remote) without phoning numbers through to the database. Is there a card reader that isn't a phone.

    There is Ray although under the ORBIS project 75% of COSS’s will have an i-Phone issued to them by the end of the year. Cards can also be authenticated by:• PC Card Readers • Web Check • Sentinel Helpline

    Please can you remember to check that your publications use the correct term PRINCIPAL CONTRACTOR not Principle Contractor

      Thanks Nigel, you are of course correct but can you advise which Sentinel publication has the term 'princple contractor' within as I am unaware of the document that has used this expression?

    Will the AOL brief be registered on the new cards so that staff can be checked detailing the basic or detailed briefing received. this would remove the need to chase employers for proof.

      A good idea, unfortunately this would have been a bit of a distraction for the Sentinel Project Team whilst they introduce the new Cards and sort all the thousands of competence records. Thank you for your suggestion.MPRRV SIP

      Colin, a Windows phone which includes a camera and a standard QR code scanning app can be used now to perform a Basic Check. Please see the Sentinel website for details:https://www.railsentinel.co.uk/Hardware/WindowsPhone

      QR Code Reader works well on Windows 8 phones. On your device, go to Store, then Apps, then search for QR Code Reader. It's available as a free download and is published by ShopSavvy.

      Hi Mary, although a good suggestion the danger is the list wouldnt be updated as it changes, the uptodate and live list of suppliers can be found on www.rail.achilles.com. that way you can ensure details are correct.

    Sponsors will not offer me work unless they are my primary. My primary sponsor has no work available and other companies with work available wont accept me as they are not my primary?

      David, sponsorship is least of my worries. Sentinel systems failings and its operators don't know how to log my new tickets on-10 days this time so far, over a fortnight the last time!!! UNACCEPTABLE in todays computer age.

    Due to failings of sentinel system & ineptitudes of those who are supposed to operate it and log your new tickets on, I have been messed around & kept off work!! Sponsorships system also keeps me off work.

      Sentinel allows a training provider 15 working days to notify any training they have done. If the training provider/assessor has difficulties loading a competence they need to contact the Sentinel help who will work with them resolving any problems

      There have been some issues with the adding of competences which is expected with the introduction of any new system the majority of these are now resolved

      However there are certain areas of specialisation where we are still working with the training providers and assessors to get the system to handle the competence in the correct way e.g. Signal Sighting

      We are happy to look at any issue with competences being loaded to the Sentinel system but are unable to do so without information on the individual affected and the issue. Sentinel Team, Sentinel@mitie.com
