Safety Stand Down Week

Following the success of ‘Freeze Frame’ event in June 2010 and the findings of the safety culture programme, Investment Projects are running a safety stand down event from 30th Oct to 6th Nov 2011.

The objective of this event is to get out on site, observe what is happening and to raise the profile of close call reporting systems.

The event is based on:

  • observing how work is being conducted
  • the environment in which work is being done
  • positively challenging any unsafe practices or conditions that are seen
  • talking to people on site, offices, depots etc to see if work can be done differently and more safely
  • recording any events in the companies close call reporting system

This event is open to Project Managers, Construction Managers, Safety Coaches and Safety Professionals from both Network Rail and its suppliers. Site visits can be arranged and carried out jointly with other Network Rail or supplier’s staff. To support you in carrying out site visits below are links to some materials that might help you. This is not intended for briefing out but for your information.

Please take the time to review this information, carry out the site visits and help make our industry safer.

Having just looked a the guide for the process I feel this is very negative and only deals with poor practices and nothing about praising good practices. It must be jsut as important to acknowledge good as correct the bad.

This is true - on the presentations i have done is that contractors have identified and raised problems but NDS & Maintenance do not close out - Especially Needles and holes in fences

I can only agree with Trevor Peel, praising good safety behaviour is every bit as important as being critical of poor practice. People respond to praise and react to criticism.
