Sites of Special Scientific Interest

Network Rail owns around 219 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), that are protected because of their special interest for wildlife, habitat or geology. Many more are located near the railway and Network Rail and its contractors have a legal obligation not to cause damage to any designated SSSI regardless of ownership.
The appropriate statutory agency MUST be notified in good time before any operations requiring consent are carried out on or near the site and agreement should be obtained on methods of work. Sufficient time should be allowed so that mitigation plans can be developed if necessary.
The link below will take you to a an excel database that contains:
• a list of SSSIs where the SSSI crosses (in part or entirely) the boundary of Network Rail owned land;
• a list of SSSIs where the SSSI runs directly adjacent to Network Rail owned land.
This database, when used effectively, can help you identify the locations of SSSIs when planning your works.
